How quickly the school year is passing. It seems like just yesterday that we were eagerly awaiting the first day of a new school year. Now we are looking forward to winter break; the perfect time to unwind, regroup, and reflect on the ways to connect for success.

Connect with Resources and Information: Read the various Bulletin articles and visit the featured websites. I encourage you to explore all of the online resources available from PTA, BCPS, MSDE and other featured organizations.

Connect with your School: Continue to monitor homework, interims and report cards. Follow up on observations made during American Education Week and/or items discussed at a Parent-Teacher Conference.

Connect with the School System (BCPS and MSDE): Attend School Board meetings and Area Education Advisory Council Meetings. Make a difference by sharing your opinions and suggestions for improvements. Celebrate success by becoming aware of all the great things that are happening in our schools.

Connect with your Elected Officials: Request that public school education is adequately funded. ADVOCATE!

Connect with your local PTA membership: Plan PTA meetings and programs that meet the needs and expectations of your membership. Increase the avenues of communication.

Connect with PTA Council: Share your best practices, ideas, and concerns. Attend meetings and participate in leadership training. Help us to fill vacancies on the PTA Council Board of Directors.

Connect with State and National PTA: Become aware of programs, resources, and training opportunities.

Connect with your friends and family: Most importantly…..Your family comes first! DO NOT become so overwhelmed with your role in PTA that you can’t find time to spend with your family. Enjoy!

Connect for the Safety of Children: Please attend the 1/21/10 general meeting when our featured program will revisit an issue that Council first presented in March 2007; Gangs. Thanks to Dulaney HS PTSA President, Terri Seitz Parrish, for contacting PTA Council to request that we re-address an issue that continues to negatively impact our communities, schools, and children regardless of their age. Refer to pages 14 and 15 of this Bulletin.

As we look ahead to 2010, I wish you a Happy New Year filled with limitless opportunities and possibilities.
