Local PTA units are independent non-profits with state and federal requirements (990 to IRS in November, Maryland Charitable Solicitations Act filing in December, Maryland Personal Property Tax Form in April).
PTA Council is a support organization with no legal standing over units. Units pay minimal Council Dues so we can run our organization; we do no fundraising and are all volunteers. We’re here as a resource for you.
PTA units are chartered under Free State PTA (FSPTA), which is chartered under National PTA (NPTA). Units pay dues (per member) to NPTA and FSPTA. A unit must have at least 10 members and pay dues to NPTA/FSPTA by 3/31 each year to be considered “in good standing,” although dues can be collected all year.
